Down below we have listed a few tips and tricks that work well for when we need to prepare for a test, exam, or quiz.
This post is all about our best studying tips to help you ace your test!
Fool-Proof Studying Tips to Prepare You For
An Exam
1. Read The Material
Familiarize yourself with the material BEFORE your test date. The worst thing you can do is try to cram anything and everything on the night before without actually knowing what you’re studying. Read the material while the course is ongoing so you aren’t playing catch-up a couple of hours prior to the test!
2. Start Studying In Advance
We’ve all been there, the evening before a big test, trying to cram whatever we can into our brain and feeling very overwhelmed. Unfortunately, it doesn’t work like this! Unless you have a photographic memory and can memorize everything in-front of you, you need to start studying well in advance.
If you have a major test coming up, prepare yourself as early as possible. Give yourself time to understand the material and ask any questions when necessary. Re-read your textbooks, summarize, take notes, utilize flash cards… Do everything you can so you aren’t stressing right before!
3. Organize Yourself
Don’t study in complete chaos. Organize your material, study space, and your environment. This will in turn help the material stay organized within your mind. Your environment has a direct impact on the way you retain information. Organizing your space will help you to feel more at peace when studying.
4. Limit Distractions
This is a super important tip when studying! Limit your distractions within your study space. Things like the TV, cellphones, your computer, a Xbox, etc. are very distracting when trying to concentrate. Remove anything from your space you know will distract you, so you’re not tempted by them.
5. Set Up Rewards
Don’t limit yourself to studying and ONLY studying. Set up reward sessions! For example, allow yourself 5 minutes of social media when you finish summarizing two chapters. Setting yourself up a reward will help incentivize studying.
6. Take Breaks
Do not study straight for hours without a couple of breaks. This will not only overwhelm your mind, but completely tire it out. You need to set aside time away from the notes and flashcards and give your mind and body a well deserved break. This will keep you from zoning out and feeling trapped in your space. Go for a walk, get some fresh air, do some exercise, play with your dog… whatever makes you feel more at ease and refreshed, utilize it!
7. Find The Right Environment
Figure out which environment works best for you! Personally, unlike a lot of other people, I cannot study in a library. The total dead silence and stressful atmosphere just makes me feel completely out of place. I like to be in a space where I can play some study music, chew on my snacks, and leave to go to the bathroom without having to take my army of supplies with me. Find a space and atmosphere that you feel the most motivated and at peace within.
8. Make Notes
Reading the material isn’t studying, it’s just reading the material. In order to actually learn and commit things to memory, you need to do more than just read it. You need to read it, summarize it, take notes, and then make flashcards on the important concepts, dates, and terms. We highly recommend grabbing some highlighters, paper pads, and flashcards and get busy!

9. Study With Others
We find that explaining answers to others really helps the information stick inside of our minds. Whether you study with a group of friends from your class, or even a volunteered family member/loved one. Having them ask you questions which you answer will really develop your minds understanding of the material.
10. Test Yourself
Create yourself a test on the material. This will help you prepare yourself for the testing process itself without the help of your notes nearby. Practicing taking a test will also help you feel more at ease for when you do sit down to take it.
Something that will also help? Create different types of tests. Some multiple choice, some long answer, some short answer, equations, etc. But don’t take the test the same day you create it. This will help your mind distance itself from the right answers and act like a real test.
Our biggest and best tips are to never leave your studying until the last minute. Always, always prepare yourself beforehand! You can’t fit an entire month or year of material into the night prior to an exam/test. It’s just NOT possible. Don’t overwhelm yourself! Plan out your study schedule weeks in advance and don’t get behind on the material!
